"Do you like your new job, Mike?"

A van is going down the road, and the van driver is speaking to the young man beside him.

"Yes, I do, Bill. And do you like your assistant?"

"Well, he's not bad."

"Thanks!"

They laugh. Bill asks, "Is this your first job?"

"No," Mike says. "I always get a summer job. We get a vacation from college in the summer."

Bill laughs. "You students are lucky."

"Yes, but you van drivers are lucky too. You've got a fantastic assistant."

"Fantastic?" Bill says. "Who's this fantastic assistant? You?"

"Yes, me."

"Oh," Bill says. "And do girls think you're fantastic too?" Mike laughs. "I don't know."

Mike’s Lucky Day

It’s the summer vacation and Mike worked as an assistant van driver. In the van when he worked with Bill they spoke about the job and where they had to go . Mike took the boxes and went into the store. The boxes were so big that he couldn’t see things in front of him. But he saw a girl who stood behind the counter. Mike wasn’t careful and walked into a big pile of cans. Jennifer ran to him while he was sitting on the floor with the cans and boxes. Mike and Jennifer smiled at each other. Mike thought about Jennifer Morgan every day. Next Monday they came to the Morgan’s again. In the store Bill said, that Mike liked girls with dark curly hair.

When Jennifer looked at Mike, his face was red. Then Bill and Mike went to the van. In the van Bill said to Mike that he had asked her out next Monday. Monday came again. He wanted to speak to Jennifer alone. When he ran in he didn’t see Jennifer. Next afternoon Mike phoned her o go out with him on Friday and she said yes. Friday came and at 7.30 Mike ran into the house to change his clothes. Then he ran to the bus but his money was in the other jeans. Mike ran back to the house but his parents were not at home and his key was in the other jeans. So he couldn’t open the door. But Mike saw an open window and there was a drainpipe near it. There he climbed inn the house. Mike didn’t see the police car. The police stopped the boy and took him to the police station.. He told them his story again and again. Then he could go but he came too lat. The next day he phoned Jennifer, but she didn’t speak to him. On Sunday Mike wrote a letter to her and told her all what happened and that he wanted to meet her in Broadway Coffee house at 8.00. When they met Mike sat down and looked at her. Mike excused her seef and they were happy.
