I19 Don Massarolo

Narrator: Elisa Semenzin Reporter: Vanessa Storgato

At the end of 1944 a small group of partisans stopped a column of German soldiers in Falze’ (a small village near Montebelluna). A fight started and in the end the Germans began to set the village on fire to make the partisans escape.

Then the Germans captured twenty civilians and put them in a row to shoot them. The priest of Trevignano, Don Massarolo knelt down in front of the machine gun imploring to set those innocent people free and to kill himself instead of them.

In the end the soldiers did not kill anybody and, to remember the fact and to thank God, the villagers built a holy monument dedicated to the Lady of “Carmelo”
