A1 Home on foot

A1 Home by foot

Narrator: Anton Hörmann
Reporter: Martin Hörmann

In the winter of the year 1944/45 I was in operation on the River Maas in the artillery.
We fired at the Allied forces and they fired back. In this duel our gun was damaged and therefore I was commanded to another department.

In the spring of the year 1945 we were locked up on both sides by the Americans and we had to withdraw to Germany. One day I and my troups were ordered to a certain place. But we did not reach this place, because the Americans surprised us and captured us. I can remember this very well, we were removed by a black American with a machine-gun in his hand. We came to a camp for prisoners of war to Sherbourg in France.

After some days I was taken to a ship. Because of the reason that the German Army had already capitulated, no more prisoners were taken to America and so I was taken to Germany.
After a short captivity I was released. I went by train to Linz and started a 3 days walk to my home village Plessberg.

On Nov 10, 1945 the war ended for me.
