I was 14 years old and lived in Groß Taxen when the National Socialists with Adolf Hitler came to Austria in 1938 and took over Austria’s government.

In the last school year I experienced all the changes. From that time on there were lots of festivities. The “SA” which had already existed illegally worked in public then. May 1st was celebrated with great festivities. The political changes were done very carefully and all the organisations were led then by National Socialists.

At the age of fifteen I became a member of the “Hitlerjugend”. The “Hitlerjugend” got its own uniform later. Our new currency was the “Reichsmark”. The National Socialists only told us positive things about living in the camp and soon we became members of the “Wehrmacht”, the German army.

The greeting had to be “Heil Hitler”.
